A few weekends ago I started sanding down this table to repaint it.
I have had this table for quite a few years now, and it started off pine then I used an ivy stencil around the corners.
I got the table from Ikea in Leeds even before there was an Ikea open at Nottingham. We drove the table home in a smallish car with the table resting over the top of the headrests so it would fit in the car! Husband and I had compacted backs for a week after driving home squashed in our seats with the table over our heads, probably highly illegal but I just had to have it!
But back to the sanding.
This is it having had a sanding with the electric sander and ready for painting.
Painted white and drying in the living room. Under this white paint is grey so when I distress it the grey shows through. |
2 coats of white paint and a new handle. |
The table then went back on the garden to be distressed by hand so the grey paint would show through.
Here is my lovely assistant.
It took about 2 hours by hand to distress and gave me a really sore arm and shoulder!
After sanding by hand the table looked a bit shiny on top still so kind husband got out the electric sander again and went over it to dull it off and then it got sanded again by hand with a really fine paper to finish it off.
Really pleased with the result, the grey shows through and it looks shabby and chic!

Have a delicious day!
It looks fantastically shabby chic! I love the finish you've achieved with it - well worth the elbow grease, did you wait long between coats? The little drawer knob is so pretty too, do you keep your cutlery in it? I've always wanted a table with a drawer!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Years ago my parents owned a company that specialised in selling products for antiques, furniture etc called Classic Finishes (I worked there too), so I know what effort went into your table - Very nice!
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of work to make it look like it's shabby!! O_0 I guess I'm too old to understand this trend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a big job! it looks fabtastic!! i wish i had an electric sander so I can do BIG projects like you, love the shabby chic distressed look of it, i hate sanding it by hand and you have to distress it by hand, imagine if i do both sanding and distressing by hand urghhh...but love the new look of it!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great still have to finish mine - just a bit of touching up here and there. Hubby dropped bombshell the other day and said he did not want the dresser top in the house - WHAT - i'm working on it and may even have to rupture a disc in my spine but I will drag it in if it kills me. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWow, that looks fabulous - your hard work was well worth it. Love the new knob on the little drawer too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely table. It certainly looks great after your hard work. Love the distressing as well.
ReplyDeleteI have to do something like that with my table ;)

When you say you did that distressing by hand.....you mean without using an electric sander?
ReplyDeleteBecause if so, man you are brave...and determined! I would never ever attempt that without a sanding machine - I am far too lazy. :)
Your table looks great. Really. Well done you.
